The droning of ghastly voices grew louder, closer. Glistening pearls and sapphires fell from the trees as they were shaken by the rapid movement of hundreds--no, thousands--of shadows. Shadows that wept and gnashed their enormous teeth. They swept the landscape like trails of smoke while we awkwardly hopped through the snow.

"Conor," I said, my chest tight from running and inhaling the arctic air. "What's going on? What are they?"

"Bad news is what they are. We need to find shelter and fast, like, or you can kiss your soul good-bye."

"Our...our souls?" Orna stammered.

"Aye. It's what the langers feed on."

"Oh, dear me! Why did I ask to come along with this ridiculous ragtag band of misfits? We're going to die here for sure!"

"Wind your neck in, Puss in Boots! I can barely hear meself think!"

"Well, I never...mortal, you will refer to me as Orna the Wise and--waaah!"

I ducked as a stream of spirits flew just over us. Just another inch or two closer and it would've been "game over" for me. The swarm of specters made an arc and descended upon us.

Ace planted his boots in the snow and spun his scythe.

"What are you doin', ya gowlbag?" Conor snapped.

"I'll fend 'em off. Dealin' with malevolent spirits is kinda my specialty."

"I could give a rat's arse what your specialty is! They'll overwhelm you and snatch your soul right outta your body, boi!"

"I've gotta try. We're like fish in a barrel out here if we don't do somethin', anyway."

"Your funeral. C'mon, Alice."

I shook my head and jerked my hand out of his grip. "We can't just leave him like this."

"Alice, listen to me..." He grabbed me by my shoulders. "You can't beat these things. They're among the deadliest Fae in all the realms."

"I will never abandon people in need," I growled. "Especially a friend. Get that through that thick skull of yours, Faerie boy."

I caught myself and covered my mouth. Another Freudian slip courtesy of "mommy dearest," no doubt.

He sighed and drew his pistols. "Fine. I've always had trouble sayin' 'no' to a fair lass. Let's help Sparkles, but just this once."

I turned to the cat on my shoulder. "Orna, you know what to do."

"Y-y-you're not seriously implying we're going to fight them, are you?"

"That's exactly what I'm implying."

"I have made a rather grievous tactical error in becoming your acquaintance. I had no idea you were this stupid and reckless."

"Yup. You'd better get used to it."

A flash. The broken blade materialized in my hand. I marched towards the howling tornado of souls that gyrated towards the vampire boy. He held them off, his spinning scythe shimmering in the night.

A pair of translucent faces lunged at me, their gaping maws threatening to swallow me whole. Orna yelped as I swung the sword. The ghosts dispersed into mist...

Then simply reformed above me.

"Aw, crap," I muttered. "Guess Conor was right."

A gunshot clapped. An undulating water spirit swept a handful of the attackers away with a tidal wave.

"Me Godshells are workin' again!" Conor cheered. "That's the job!"

He fired volleys of enchanted bullets while I swiped at another horde, and then another.
